“Zoe, Sarah and I are going out for a quick bite. Do you want to tag along?” Drake asked walking into the living room.
“No, I’m fine. I had a plasma juice a little bit ago,” I replied.
“Ok,” he said walking up to me. “We won’t be long.” He wrapped his arms around my back and kissed me.
“You better not be,” I said as he started out the door.
I decided to do a little redecorating around the house. I walked into the dining room and started eyeing what changes could be made.
My back was to the entrance and I didn’t hear the front door creak open or anyone walk up behind me, but I felt the arms grab my waist. I jumped.
“Drake you…” I stopped as I turned to face the person behind me, “VINCENT!” I gasped.
“I’m back!” Vincent said with a huge smile on his face. “And I come bearing gifts! Well of course not including myself!”
I wrapped my arms around his neck and hugged him. “Welcome back! You scared me! I didn’t even hear you come in!”
“Sorry about that,” he said still smiling. His gorgeous green eyes sparkled as he spoke. “You look beautiful!”
“Me? Look at this hair!” I said running my fingers through his long mane. “I can’t believe it. It looks great on you.”
“Yeah, I decided to take your advice, glad you like it.”
“So how was France? And are you back for good?” I asked unable to contain my excitement. Truth be told, I’ve missed him quite a bit. Everyone had seemed to move on with their lives. With Maggie and Sam being back in Riverview, nothing seemed the same anymore. I’ve been longing for another person to talk to or to go out and have fun with.
“Yes, back for good,” Vincent said interrupting my thoughts. “France was great. I bumped into a few familiar faces out there. It was an old pack I used to hunt with when I was first turned. Uh Zo, were you just blocking me there?”
“Yes,” I smiled. “Drake taught me how. I’ve gotten a handle on all of the little vampire tricks!”
“Great!” Vincent said sarcastically. “Now I’ll never get to know what’s in that head of yours! Where is he anyway?”
“He and Sarah went on a hunt.”
“I see, ok, why didn’t you go with them? You do feed on humans now right?”
I giggled. “Yes, of course I do. I’m all vampire now! But I had something to eat already. I’m still full and besides, even an undead girl has to watch her figure.”
He smiled, “I don’t think that’ll ever be a concern for you, Zo.
He stepped a bit closer. “So how much did you miss me?”
“What makes you think I missed you at all?”
“Your reaction when you saw it was me? Come on Zo, I know you at least that much,” he smiled. “Well?”
“Enough to hug you like I did when I saw it was you. You’re great company.”
“I know I’m a hard guy to get over.”
“Yeah and you’re obviously not over yourself!” I joked.
“See what I mean?” he smiled. “So how do you like it here? I went by your old apartment.”
“Why? I told you I’d moved in with Drake the last time we talked. And I love it. I haven’t quite made it mine yet, but I’m working on it.”
“I don’t know why I went back. Habit? Nostalgia? Looking for you?” he said with a smile. “So has your relationship changed at all with that old fang?”
“No, nothing other than living together. We’ve just been enjoying the calmness of everything lately. It’s nice not having to look over your shoulder constantly.”
“Isn’t Ravencroft still out there? You still have him to worry about.”
“Yeah he’s still out there somewhere. And I’m sure he is planning something big. But I don’t worry about him. When he resurfaces we’ll try and be ready for him when he comes,” I answered. “It’s been quiet lately; hopefully it stays this way a while longer.”
He stood looking at me for a moment. His cell phone went off in his pocket; the ringtone was AC/DC’s “Back in Black” and it was screaming from his pants.
“Seriously?” I asked with a smile.
“What? It’s a great song!” he replied.
The phone continued ringing; he took it out and looked at it.
“Are you going to get that?”
“No, they can wait,” he said placing the phone on vibrate and putting it back in his pocket.
“So Drake is moving slower than I expected him to, were it me, I’d have a ring on your finger already.”
“Vincent, don’t,” I said.
“I’m just saying,” he sighed. “Have the two of you even discussed becoming more serious?”
“Vincent what is this? No. We haven’t. Why are you asking me that?”
“Because you’re all I thought about the last 8 months. I’ve been hoping that you and he hadn’t. I don’t know. To be honest I was a little nervous to return to Bridgeport. I wasn’t sure what your reaction would be to me coming back, after I’d left the way I did.”
“You did what you thought was best,” I smiled at him.
“That smile, I’ve dreamt of that smile every night.” Vincent stepped even closer to me and held my face.
“Don’t,” I said warning him and asking him to back off with one word.
“Don’t what? Don’t do exactly what you want me to? Don’t show you how much I’ve missed you? Or don’t do this…?”
He pressed his lips against mine and held me against his chest. I wanted to fight him off, but I didn’t even try. I placed my arms around him and kissed him back. He was right. I did want him to and as much as I hated myself for it, I couldn’t resist him.
He pulled away for a moment and looked at me with a smile, shocked at the realization that I was kissing him the way he wanted me to.
He brought me back into him, kissing me with even more passion than before. I ran my fingers through his hair.
His arms squeezed me tighter; his mouth enveloped mine, his tongue danced with mine in perfect harmony. It was the kiss that I was hoping wouldn’t happen between us. The kiss I knew would speak volumes on how I felt about him. The kiss I wanted to keep to myself for eternity.
His hands slid to the small of my back and I felt his fingers tugging and slowly pulling my shirt up. I pushed him away.
“Déjà vu,” he said as I backed away.
“What?” I asked.
“I’ve played this moment out a half dozen times if not more, Zo. But the thoughts are greatly out shadowed by actuality.” He started back towards me, a lustful gleam still present in his eyes.
“Don’t please,” I glanced down at my feet. “We can’t do that again, Vincent. I shouldn’t have let you do that in the first place. I’m in love with Drake. I’m with Drake; he’s who I want to be with. You and I have to remain friends…only. It’s not going to work out.”
“It’s ok to love two people, Zo. I know how you feel about me even if you’ve never said it. I can’t fight my feelings for you and to be honest I don’t want to try anymore.” He grabbed me in his arms again.
“Vincent please this isn’t fair to Drake!” I yelled pushing away from him again.
“And what about me?” he said in response. “Should my heart bleed for the rest of my existence? Do you have any idea how it feels to want something so bad that you can never, ever have? It’s like an unending torture, never knowing what if anything you could share with someone.”
We stood in silence for what seemed like forever. I could see the pain and hurt in his eyes.
“I brought you something,” Vincent finally spoke. “I found it in an antiques shop and thought of you.” He pulled out an idol of some kind. “It’s said to have once been housed in the private museum of Psimcasso himself.”
“That’s very thoughtful of you, Vincent,” I said as I viewed the piece. Now I have to find some place to put it. That’s kind of what I was doing before you came in. I’m in a remodeling kind of mood.”
“Need help with anything?”
“Sure,” I said. “Grab the end of that table for me and push against the wall there, please.”
Vincent moved the table away from the center of the room. “So what was it? Blonde or dirty blonde? I’m leaning more towards the former,” I asked still tasting Vincent’s last meal on my tongue.
“Blonde. Wow, you have learned a few new vampire tricks,” he smiled.
“We’re back!” Drake said as he and Sarah entered into the living room. “Zoe?”
“In here, honey.” That word bothered Vincent and he gave me a look to let me know.
“Vincent?” Drake said seeing his friend standing against the back corner. “When did you get back?”
“And a hearty hello to you too, Drake. I flew in this afternoon,” he replied.
“Staying long?” he asked.
“Drake, if I didn’t know any better I’d think you weren’t very happy to see me!” Vincent replied with a grin. “And to answer your question, yes, I am back to stay. France was nice, but it got boring quickly.”
Drake walked over and stood next to me. “So how have you been, Sarah?” Vincent asked ignoring the stare down Drake was beaming at him.
“Other than having my house go up in flames, I’ve been well, thank you. Drake and Zoe let me move in here. It’s been nice. I’m still trying to find a place of my own though. I don’t want to wear out my welcome.”
“Don’t be silly, Sarah,” I said. “I love having you around. You can stay as long as you want.”
“What’s this?” Drake asked taking notice of the statue on the table.
“It’s an antique Vincent brought me from France. He said it once belonged to Psimcasso. He kept it in a private museum. It’s kind of an odd piece though. It’s not the kind of art I’d think Psimcasso would have been into. I like it though. It’s kinda like having a glimpse into the mind of a master artist. I get to see what type of art inspired him.”
“I knew you’d see more in that statue than anyone else, Zo. It’s why I immediately thought of you when it was on the auction block,” Vincent said.
“Wait…you got it at an auction? Not an antiques shop?” I asked.
“Both, an auction at an antiques shop. Does it make a difference?”
“Guess not. It just seemed more ‘wow’ knowing it was just sitting in a dusty antiques shop being overlooked for years than to know someone had it in their home as a conversation piece. I guess I’m just weird like that.”
“It’s not weird, Zo. You’re a romantic,” he smiled. “Sorry to ruin the illusion. If it makes you feel better I won’t tell you how much it cost.”
“I appreciate that.”
I picked the statue up and walked it into the living room placing it on the table under the window. It would be in a great spot once the sun comes up, I can’t wait to see it in the natural light.
“I’m gonna get a little shut eye,” I said walking back towards Drake. I grabbed his face and kissed him. “I love you.”
“It’s great seeing you again, Vincent,” I said. “Good night.” I smiled. “Goodnight Sarah.” I walked up the stairs to the bedroom and started water for a bath.
I washed, changed and climbed into the silk sheets on Drake’s ultra cozy king sized bed.
That night I couldn’t sleep. I kept having nightmares about a brutal mass murder in the hills somewhere. There was lots of screaming, blood, chaos. I couldn’t tell where I was or what was going on, but I knew it was bad. It felt as if I were the one in danger. Something was after me and though I couldn’t see my attacker, I knew he was ever present behind me.
I woke with a start. Drake was standing over me with a concerned look on his face. “Are you ok? I saw your nightmare and came to check on you.”
“Yeah, I’m fine,” I replied. “It was only a dream, although it felt so real.” I sat on the edge of the bed. “You can see my nightmares too?”
“Of course hon, they are thoughts after all. Can I get you anything?”
“No, I’ll be ok, thank you sweetie.”
I sat a while longer trying to calm my nerves. The dream seemed so real. I couldn’t shake the feeling that it actually meant something.
“Drake there’s something else,” I said walking towards him. “Vincent and I…”
“I know, Zoe, I read his thoughts when I got back. Well, more like he forced them into my head.”
“Zoe, listen. I know you love me, I do. But I also know you love him too. I can’t ask you to make any decisions and I won’t, it wouldn’t be fair. But I would appreciate it if you could be upfront about it with me; you at least owe me that.”
Drake walked over to me and held me close. “I love you Zoe and I want to be with you. And I’ll do whatever I have to for things to remain the same between us. I don’t want to spend eternity without you and I can’t imagine you not wanting the same. If you had to kiss him to explore your feelings, I can understand that. But if you want me…if you want to be with me I need you to be with me completely.”
“I want you, Drake, not Vincent. I told him we have to remain friends only. I don’t want to hurt you or lose your trust, that’s why I was trying to tell you about the kiss. I can’t begin to describe how much I love you and how sorry I am for everything.”
Drake’s eyes lit up, “You have no idea how much I needed to hear that right now. I admit I get worried seeing the two of you alone together, not because I don’t trust you Zoe, but because I know him. I’ve been agonizing over this for a while now but it was never an issue until I knew you kissed him. I’ve been so afraid of losing you.”
“I’m not going anywhere, Drake. We have eternity.”
He kissed me. He kissed me like the first time our lips met so many months ago. There was such passion and such heat in his grip, in his embrace, in his actions. I felt as if I’d slipped into that private world of ours again; he is the only one that can take me there. The slow circling of his fingers on my hips, the silky feel of his hair running through my fingers and the way our tongues move together excites me more than anything else in life.
I feel as if I’ve awakened for the first time every time he shares this part of himself with me. He held me closer, tighter, squeezing out what little air remained between us. I could feel his muscles flexing beneath me as he clutched my waist. I need him in my life. He is right; there is no imagining an eternity without him by my side.
“DRAKE! ZOE!” Sarah came rushing into the room. “There is something really freaky happening downstairs!”
We all rushed down to the living room. “It’s over by the window,” Sarah said guiding us in that direction.
“What is it?” Drake asked. “I don’t see anything.”
“It was here a minute ago, I swear!” she said. “I was coming down for a little snack and I heard something. I walked in here and there was blood dripping right here from the ceiling and a huge puddle underneath the table and I could swear I heard talking. It sounded like a witch’s incantation!”
I walked closer to the two standing near the window and noticed the area Sarah was pointing at was where I’d placed the Psimcasso piece. As I neared the table I didn’t see anything indicating what Sarah had seen but I did notice the statue was gone.
