Zoe Vale along with best friend Samantha Chad set their sights on the big time. Moving from their home in beautiful countryside Riverview to the city of Bridgeport spells adventure of a lifetime but what they find is much more than either of them bargained for.
Arriving to Bridgeport, the girls check into a shady, rundown hotel to save money as they hunt for a permanent place of residence. Taking in the sights, artist Zoe is never far from her camera. She takes pictures of everything and everyone they encounter as they become acquainted with the city but can’t shake the feeling they are being followed.
After browsing the Daily, local newspaper, Samantha is convinced she’s located the home for them. Sounding too good to be true, they head over to check it out and realize it’s available AND affordable and begin the paperwork to move in. After getting their stuff inside, they meet a strange and curious neighbor Lily who’s appearance is gaunt and pale. After unpacking, Zoe develops the shots and discovers a shadow of someone behind them in each one. They WERE being followed.
After confirming her suspicions with Samantha the girls make a plan to trick their stalker and get a glimpse of him while out job hunting. Thinking they had him cornered, they each take a side only to discover the alley was empty. After a fruitless job hunt the girls decide to have a bit of fun at a local club where they hear a superstar will be making an appearance. While there Samantha flirts with the owner, Gabriel London. He invites her out leaving Zoe to fend for herself. On the way home, she’s attacked and a strange man comes to her rescue.
Chapter 05: Flirting With Danger
After being taken to the hospital, Zoe recalls the night’s events to Samantha and they both begin to wonder if her rescuer and their stalker is one and the same person. Deciding to use her art as a distraction, Zoe heads to the store to gather supplies. On the way out she bumps into a man with piercing blue eyes. He introduces himself as Drake and Zoe confirms he is the same person that had been following them. She takes him back to her place and he waits for an invitation before he comes in.
Zoe gives Drake a tour of their place and Samantha and Gabriel become closer. Zoe considers the fact that Drake and Lily are friends and she kept popping up wherever they went could not be coincidence they were also neighbors. Using his contacts, Gabriel gets Samantha an audition for a Producer with a major recording company. Zoe tries her hand at painting Drake and on the way to bed hears whispers out in the hall only to discover Drake has returned.
Having overheard some interesting things through the door, Zoe questions Drake about it and he avoids the subject. They have a small conversation and she learns a bit more about the mysterious man and how he came to be following her. He tells her he was following his friend Lily, not her and changes the subject when he notices his portrait. Zoe tells Samantha part of the conversation she heard between him and who she believes to be Lily about her having a birth right. With Drake on her mind she heads over to the local museum and checks out the art work. A section on Champs Le Sim where Drake is from catches her attention and she finds the man in one of the shots has a striking resemblance.
Determined to figure out the man she invited into her home, Zoe takes note of the year and researches the country around that time through the library and old historical records. Coming across a family records holder, she begins to think the impossible: Drake Steele in 1826 is the same one she met not 2 days ago. Drake heads over to see her and tells her she is in danger. He confirms her suspicions and that tells her there is much more to the story than she knows.
Drake tells Zoe that she’s a witch by birth and that having moved from her home in Riverview, other magical creatures are aware of her coming into her powers and are after her. He comes clean that he had been following her to keep her safe but now she’s in danger and will have to learn to use her magic to save herself.
Zoe and Drake get closer as he teaches her how to handle her abilities. She tells Samantha about what Drake said and what he is and Sam begins questioning him, finding amusement behind the whole thing. During their training sessions Lily comes in and tells Drake that some of their old enemies, the Savage Brothers, had just made it to town and to be on the lookout. While trying to get her home, he’s attacked by someone.
Zoe recognizes his attacker as the man she’d danced with at Aquarius the night she too was attacked. Drake gets Zoe home and she tells Sam that she should go away for a while so she isn’t hurt. Zoe begins getting visions and is confused what they mean. Later they discover Elijah and Asher Savage gave her those visions to trick Drake and get Zoe for themselves.
After kidnapping Drake and Zoe the Savages try to “convince” her that working as their witch would be in her better interest. She refuses and they begin beating Drake to convince her. After being locked into another room and fearing the worst for Drake’s well-being Lily comes to their rescue and makes Zoe use her magic to safely teleport them home. Drake tells Zoe that she should have a grimoire and she realizes that her mother had an old book that they’d packed away in her things after her death.
Chapter 13: Strength in Numbers
Drake goes to retrieve the book from Riverview as Lily calls in reinforcement from their clans. Drake takes Zoe to gather the supplies needed to cast a heavy amount of magic and begin preparing for a big showdown by prepping the graveyard in order to lock the Savages away for good. Zoe meets Drake’s Uncle Montgomery and he is surprised that Drake broke his cover with the Vale witch. He prepares to help them with the Savages but before they can get anything underway Zoe’s sister is kidnapped.
Zoe freaks out and Drake tries to keep her calm before she runs off into the trap the Savages set for her. He tells her they need to make a plan and begins to think it through before finally telling her to go to Maggie. Drake, Monty and Lily break into the warehouse they are holding Maggie to attempt a rescue mission for her and Zoe. A battle breaks out and Drake gets Maggie and Zoe out and discover she’s been fed on. While Maggie recovers, Drake helps Zoe cast a binding spell by calling on the spirits of the elements.
The girls go out on the town to celebrate, Maggie gets safely home and Zoe takes Drake back to her place and learns more about him. While out on a stroll Zoe sees Drake talking to her landlord and eavesdrop after they get inside the building. She overhears him speaking to someone he refers to as his mother and she mentions Drake’s part in the death of her parents.
